The usually bustling Akpakpava Road in Benin City presented an eerie calm this morning. When visited at 8:25am, the street was as quiet as a graveyard, a stark contrast to its typical lively atmosphere. This unusual stillness came in anticipation of the expected protest that had been announced days prior.
All banks and shops along the road were firmly shut, with their doors locked and windows shuttered. The normally crowded sidewalks, filled with the hustle and bustle of commuters and shoppers, were empty.
Human and vehicular movement was at its lowest ebb, with only a few stray pedestrians and sporadic vehicles interrupting the silence.
The impact of the anticipated protest was palpable, casting a somber mood over one of the city’s main arteries. The usual hum of activity was replaced by a tense quiet, as the city braced for what was to come.
