The cause of the engine issue was attributed to Foreign Object Damage (FOD) due to a bird nest in one of the engines. Sam Iwuajoku, the CEO of Executive Jets, the company that owns the hangar where the private jet was parked, explained that when aircraft are parked and not properly covered, birds can build nests, which can lead to high-temperature conditions and, in this case, an explosion. He noted that such incidents are not uncommon in Africa due to the presence of birds around.
