The Edo State Government, in collaboration with Heads of Local Government Administration (HOLGA), has intensified the Monday morning market environmental sanitation exercise through the Ministry of Environment and Sustainability and the Edo State Waste Management Board. Market traders and shop owners have been urged to increase their level of compliance.

During the sanitation take-off exercise at Uregbeni market, Ikpoba-Hill, Benin City on Monday 21st August 2023, the Honourable Commissioner Arc. Joshua Omokhodion accompanied by the General Manager Mr. Osadebamen Charles Imariagbe, Heads of Oredo and Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Areas (LGAs) Mr. Kensington Osifo and Mr. Henry Edenamigho respectively as well as Senior Health Officers made this known.

Omokhodion commended Governor Godwin Obaseki’s resolute commitment to endowing Edo state with a pristine and salubrious environment that would serve as a magnet for both domestic and international investors, ultimately transforming it into an idyllic destination.

Omokhodion stressed the crucial position of Ikpoba-Okha as a nexus route linking northern Nigeria with other parts of the country. Therefore, it is imperative for its environment to be aesthetically pleasing in order to attract tourists and investors, which will ultimately bolster economic growth.

During his address, Mr. Osadebamen Charles Imariagbe acknowledged an increase in market trader/shop owner compliance rates. He emphasized the need to extend this success to all markets in other LGAs across the state by stating that they are moving incrementally towards this goal. He furthermore expressed his desire for the people to always participate in the cleaning processes voluntarily so that the exercises can be carried out without coercion or forceful measures being necessary.

Ikpoba-Okha LGA Head Mr. Henry Edenamigho assured readiness towards ensuring high levels of compliance while thanking State government for such laudable initiative making Edo prideful – same sentiments echoed by Oredo LGA head Mr Kensington Osifo who stressed the need for mobile courts across market places in the City to enable the prosecution of defaulters of the early Monday Morning Market Environmental Sanitation directives to serve as deterrents for others defying orders.
