In a bold and strategic move to address rising security concerns, Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, on Monday convened a high-level security meeting in Iyamho, Etsako West Local Government Area.
The meeting brought together an array of key stakeholders, including prominent political figures, traditional and religious leaders, and heads of security agencies in the state. The focus was to collaboratively chart a course toward resolving the region’s unique security challenges, particularly in Edo North.
According to a statement by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, the closed-door meeting was part of the Governor’s comprehensive effort to stabilize and secure the state. Governor Okpebholo assured that his administration would not tolerate criminal activities, pledging to take decisive action against any elements attempting to disrupt the peace.
“Our state will not be a safe haven for criminals. We are committed to making Edo inhabitable for anyone seeking to undermine our security,” the Governor declared.
Among the dignitaries present were the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku; former Edo State Governor and Senator representing Edo North, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole; Minister for Regional Development, Abubakar Momoh; former Deputy Governors Peter Obadan and Philip Shaibu; former Chief of Staff to the President, Chief Mike Ogiadomhe; former Minister of State for Budget and National Planning, Clem Agba; as well as traditional rulers, religious leaders, and senior security officials.
Governor Okpebholo emphasized the importance of the engagement, noting that the forum allowed for open and productive discussions on practical solutions to security threats. “This meeting was both timely and impactful. We deliberated extensively and agreed on collaborative strategies. The people of Edo can look forward to significant improvements in security,” he said.
Comrade Oshiomhole, speaking after the session, commended the Governor’s proactive stance and described the meeting as unprecedented. “This is the first time a Governor is coming down to engage us directly on security matters. His presence and willingness to listen to the people have reassured us. He has also provided logistics support, including vehicles and motorcycles, to bolster the operations of security agencies,” Oshiomhole noted.
He added that the Governor’s inclusive approach, especially his readiness to involve local communities in security efforts, would go a long way in fostering peace and order. “The Governor has not only demonstrated leadership but has shown that he values the input of every stakeholder. We are confident that Afenmai land and the entire state will witness improved security under his leadership,” he stated.
Also speaking, the Catholic Bishop of Auchi Diocese, Most Rev. Gabriel Dunia, expressed gratitude to all participants and urged continuous collaboration. “We appreciate the Governor and our traditional leaders for prioritizing the security of our people. This joint effort will surely yield peace,” he said.
In his remarks, His Royal Highness, Mallam Ali Suleiman, a traditional ruler from Edo North, described the meeting as a landmark event. “The Governor’s physical presence here signifies the seriousness of this issue. We now have renewed confidence and are resolved to work hand-in-hand with security agencies to protect our communities,” he concluded.
The meeting marks a significant step in Edo State’s efforts to curb insecurity and restore confidence among residents, with assurances from all quarters of continued collaboration and vigilance.
