Benin City, the Edo State capital, was filled with jubilation on Thursday as Governor Monday Okpebholo and Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa returned from Abuja following the affirmation of their electoral victory by the election petition tribunal. The tribunal upheld their mandate as the duly elected Governor and Deputy Governor of Edo State in the September 21, 2024, governorship election.
A grand motorcade, led by Deputy Governor Idahosa and Secretary to the State Government, Musa Ikhilor, accompanied Governor Okpebholo from the airport to the palace of the revered Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty, Omo N’ Oba N’ Edo Uku Akpolokpolo Oba Ewuare II. Along the route, enthusiastic residents cheered in celebration of the tribunal’s verdict.
During the courtesy visit to the Oba of Benin, Governor Okpebholo expressed his profound gratitude for the monarch’s prayers and unwavering support for the administration since its inception. He also extended his appreciation to the people of Edo State and commended the tribunal judges for delivering a unanimous and fair judgment based on the evidence presented before them.
Governor Okpebholo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering good governance and ensuring that Edo people continue to reap the benefits of democracy.
“I am here at the palace to inform you that the election petition tribunal has resolved all matters between Monday Okpebholo and Asue Ighodalo in my favor. The three judges unanimously confirmed that I won the September 21st governorship election in Edo State. Three parties challenged our victory in court, but all cases were dismissed, affirming that I am the duly elected Governor of Edo State.
“Your Majesty, I extend my sincere appreciation to you and the good people of Edo for your love, prayers, and support. I remain committed to working tirelessly for the progress and development of our dear state.”
In a historic moment, His Royal Majesty, Oba Ewuare II, expressed his delight over the tribunal’s judgment and described Governor Okpebholo as a traditional son of the palace. The Monarch personally bestowed prayers upon the Governor—a rare gesture, as he typically delegates such duties to palace chiefs.
The Oba acknowledged the Governor’s efforts in steering the state toward growth and development, stating:
“The tribunal’s judgment is a victory for the people of Edo State. The Governor has hit the ground running, and his dedication to service is evident. I had a scheduled working visit today, but upon hearing of the Governor’s return, I chose to remain and receive him.
“He is my traditional son, and we will continue to pray for him and offer our fatherly guidance. This occasion is significant—we have never left the throne to lift someone from their kneels before, but our ancestors directed us to do so today. It is a testament to the divine backing of this administration.”
The Oba further encouraged Governor Okpebholo to remain steadfast in his duties, acknowledging his tireless dedication to the state’s progress.
This was disclosed in a statement by Fred Itua, Chief Press Secretary to the Edo State Governor.
