The incumbent Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has been re-elected, delivering a decisive victory in the 2024 governorship election by winning across all 18 local government areas of the state.
Aiyedatiwa, who contested under the banner of the All Progressives Congress (APC), defeated his closest rival, Mr. Agboola Ajayi of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), with a significant margin. The APC candidate secured 366,781 votes, far surpassing Ajayi’s 117,835 votes.
The results demonstrated Aiyedatiwa’s widespread acceptance and further cemented the APC’s stronghold in the state. Notable local government results included:
Akure South: APC – 32,969; PDP – 17,926
Okitipupa: APC – 26,811; PDP – 10,233
Akoko Northeast: APC – 25,657; PDP – 5,072
Akoko Northwest: APC – 25,010; PDP – 5,502
Akure North: APC – 14,451; PDP – 5,787
Political analysts have attributed Aiyedatiwa’s landslide victory to his administration’s impactful policies in infrastructure development, economic empowerment, and health sector reforms during his first term.
In his victory speech, Aiyedatiwa thanked the people of Ondo State for their trust and reiterated his commitment to fostering unity and development. “This victory is not just for me; it is a win for all citizens of Ondo State,” he said. “Together, we will continue building the future we deserve.”
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared the election largely peaceful, despite minor logistical challenges.
Meanwhile, PDP candidate Agboola Ajayi has yet to issue a statement on the outcome.
Aiyedatiwa’s re-election solidifies the APC’s dominance in Ondo State and sets the stage for continued governance under his leadership.
