The High Court in Warri, Delta State has issued an order halting the implementation of Joint Admission and Matriculation Board’s (JAMB) policy requiring a minimum age of 16 for university admissions in Nigeria. The court order is pending further hearing and resolution of the motion filed against JAMB. Previously, JAMB announced that only candidates aged 16 by August 2025 would be eligible for tertiary institution admissions.
This decision came after the Ministry of Education set 18 as the minimum age for tertiary admission, with JAMB allowing an exception for the 2024/2025 academic session. Displeased with JAMB’s directive, John Aikpokpo-Martins, a former Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association in Warri, took legal action against the examination board. Aikpokpo-Martins, representing candidates born between September 1 and December 31, 2009, who passed the 2024 JAMB exams, filed a lawsuit marked W/311/FHR/2021 naming JAMB and Edwin Clark University as respondents
