NNPCL Urges Media to Uphold Fairness and Accuracy in Oil and Gas Reporting”

By Osaiyekemwen Confidence

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has called on media outlets and journalists to uphold the principles of fairness, accuracy, and objectivity in their reporting, particularly on matters concerning the country’s oil and gas industry.

This appeal was made during a media engagement held on Thursday, September 12, 2024, in Benin City, the capital of Edo State. The event brought together journalists from select print and online outlets.

During the session, Mr. Solomon Oseagah, the convener, urged journalists to adhere to professional ethics and provided insights into the operations of the NNPCL. He clarified that the responsibility for determining fuel prices lies with the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Agency (NMDPRA), which regulates midstream and downstream petroleum activities in the country, covering technical, operational, and commercial aspects.

Regarding the delays in refinery operations, Oseagah revealed that final touches were being made to the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries, with commissioning expected soon by President Bola Tinubu.

Oseagah also highlighted key achievements under Mr. Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of the NNPCL, including the increase in daily crude oil production from 900,000 to 1.6 million barrels and significant strides in combating oil theft.

He further noted that with the deregulation of the market, oil marketers now have the freedom to set petroleum prices. On the controversy surrounding the Dangote Refinery, Oseagah explained that the Federal Government has extended significant support to the refinery, dismissing rumors of a dispute between the government and Dangote. He emphasized that under Kyari’s leadership, the NNPCL remains committed to maintaining professional standards and transparency for the benefit of Nigerians.

Journalists in attendance expressed gratitude to the NNPCL for the opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge of the company’s operations and the various challenges facing the oil and gas sector.
