-By Christopher Omorogieva

In a groundbreaking moment at the MTV VMAs 2024 held at UBS Arena in Elmont, New York on September 11, South African artist Tyla secured victory in the Best Afrobeats category, becoming the first African female artist to achieve this milestone. Tyla’s win not only marks her as the first female African artist but also as the first South African musician to claim a VMA.

Defeating notable contenders such as Ayra Starr, Burna Boy, Chris Brown featuring Davido and Lojay, Tems, and Usher with Pheelz with her hit song ‘Water,’ Tyla expressed mixed emotions during her acceptance speech, describing the win as “special but also bittersweet” as she proudly represents Amapiano and emphasizes the diversity of African music beyond just Afrobeats.

Acknowledging the role of Afrobeats in paving the way for African artists while championing the richness and variety of African music, Tyla extended gratitude to MTV, her team, fans, and all her fellow artists in the category. She wrapped up her speech by playfully urging fans to stream her album ‘Tyla’ and sending love from Africa to the world.

The full Best Afrobeats Category at the MTV VMAs 2024 included:
– Tyla – ‘Water’ (Winner)
– Ayra Starr ft. Giveon – ‘Last Heartbreak Song’
– Burna Boy – ‘City Boys’
– Chris Brown ft. Davido & Lojay – ‘Sensational’
– Tems – ‘Love Me JeJe’
– Usher, Pheelz – ‘Ruin’

This historic win by Tyla signifies a significant breakthrough for African music on a global stage and celebrates the multifaceted nature of the continent’s musical landscape.
