Tyla’s win not only marks her as the first female African artist but also as the first South African musician to claim a VMA.
Defeating notable contenders such as Ayra Starr, Burna Boy, Chris Brown featuring Davido and Lojay, Tems, and Usher with Pheelz with her hit song ‘Water,’ Tyla expressed mixed emotions during her acceptance speech, describing the win as “special but also bittersweet” as she proudly represents Amapiano and emphasizes the diversity of African music beyond just Afrobeats.
