NUJ Calls for Security Protection for Journalists Ahead of Edo Governorship Election

By Osaiyekemwen Confidence

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State Council, has urged the military and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to ensure the protection of journalists during the Edo State governorship election on September 21, 2024.

NUJ State Chairman, Comrade Festus Alenkhe, made this appeal during a courtesy visit to 4 Brigade Commander, Brigadier General Ebenezer Oduayo, and NSCDC Edo Commandant, Agun Gbenga Joseph. Alenkhe highlighted the importance of safeguarding journalists from harm while distinguishing between professional journalists and impostors. He stressed the need for security agencies to support accredited media professionals covering the election.

Brigadier General Oduayo reassured the NUJ of the military’s ongoing support, encouraging journalists to carry proper identification to avoid unnecessary confrontations with security personnel.

NSCDC Commandant Agun Gbenga Joseph echoed the promise of safety, outlining the corps’ role in securing critical infrastructure, providing community policing, and offering voter education during the election.

Senior NUJ officials, including Vice Chairman Comrade Imelda Elogie Osayande and Secretary Comrade Andy Egbon, were also present at the meeting.
