In the lead-up to the Edo governorship election, Efe Osafomwan, a respected leader and advocate for peace, has called for calm and responsible conduct among the political candidates and their supporters. He emphasized the importance of maintaining decorum and avoiding personal attacks that could inflame tensions.
Osafomwan reminded the public of a local proverb, stating, “Whoever causes the rain also causes the cold. Whatever you know you wouldn’t like to hear about yourself, don’t say it to another person.” This wisdom, he argued, is especially relevant in the current political climate, where words hold the power to either build or destroy peace.
His comments come in response to a recent exchange between the Governor’s wife, Betty Obaseki, and political opponent Monday Okpebholo. Betty Obaseki’s remark questioning whether Okpebholo has a wife was met with a sharp rebuke from former Governor Adams Oshiomhole, who retorted that Betty Obaseki herself does not have a child.
Osafomwan criticized both sides, stating that these personal attacks are not only inappropriate but also detract from the real issues that should be at the forefront of the campaign. “This is not the way to campaign,” he said. “One side should not be blamed in this matter; both parties should be held accountable for their actions.”
In his closing remarks, Osafomwan appealed to all involved to let peace reign in Edo State, urging candidates to focus on the issues that truly matter to the people rather than engaging in harmful rhetoric.
