Legendary Nigerian singer Onyeka Onwenu has passed away at the age of 72. The music icon died on Tuesday night at Reddington Hospital in Lagos, after collapsing shortly after performing at a birthday party in the city.
According to a source close to the family, Onwenu was attending a friend’s birthday party when she took to the stage to perform. Following her performance, she returned to her seat and suddenly collapsed. She was quickly rushed to Reddington Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. The cause of death is yet to be confirmed.
Born on May 31, 1952, Onyeka Onwenu’s career spanned over four decades. She was celebrated not only as a singer and songwriter but also as an actress, journalist, and politician. Her debut album with Polygram, In The Morning Light, was released in 1984.
Onwenu’s hits such as “One Love,” “Iyogogo,” and “Ekwe” remain popular to this day.
