In a significant development, the Federal Government has appointed Omo N’ Oba N’ Edo, Uku Akpolokpolor, Ewuare II, CFR, Oba of Benin, as the Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN). This prestigious appointment aims to elevate the university’s status and advance its mission as a distinguished institution of higher learning, as it commemorates 42 years of academic excellence.
During the 13th Convocation and Investiture Ceremony held in FCT, Abuja, the Minister of State for Education, Dr. Tanko Sununu, representing the University’s Visitor, President Bola Tinubu, conferred the Chancellorship on Oba Ewuare II.
In a statement from Osaigbovo Iguobaro, Chief Press Secretary to the Oba of Benin, it was announced that the Royal Father was also honored with the title of Honoris Causa, Doctor in Public Administration by NOUN.
In his acceptance speech, Oba Ewuare II pledged to discharge his duties as Chancellor diligently. He emphasized the crucial need for adequate funding for the University and urged caution in establishing universities with multiple roles to maintain academic standards.
Additionally, Oba Ewuare II advocated for the inclusion of NOUN graduates in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme, calling for amendments to facilitate this integration.
Encouraging the graduands to become exemplary NOUN alumni and explore entrepreneurial opportunities, the Oba commended the University’s Management for its commitment to service. A total of 22,175 graduates were conferred with various degrees and merit awards during the ceremony.
Prof. Olufemi Peters, the Vice Chancellor of NOUN, hailed the Convocation as a landmark moment for the graduands, symbolizing a new era for knowledge seekers from diverse backgrounds. He underscored the University’s dedication to promoting local content by exclusively patronizing Innoson Vehicles Manufacturing Company for vehicle procurement.
In his address, President Bola Tinubu stressed the importance of cutting-edge multidisciplinary research for the benefit of Nigerian citizens. He reiterated the government’s commitment to expanding distance learning and involving the private sector to enhance access, quality, and affordability in tertiary education.
Notable recipients of honorary awards at the Convocation included Chief (Dr) Innocent Ifediaso Chukwuma, Founder of Innoson Vehicles Manufacturing Company Limited, and Hajiya Hafdatu Ahmed Abdulrahid, recognized for their significant contributions to their respective fields.
