Edo Governorship Election: NUJ Calls on Political Parties to Safeguard Journalists

– By Osaiyekemwen Confidence

Ahead of the scheduled political events on Thursday, February 22, and Friday, February 23, 2024, the Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called on political parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC), Labour Party (LP), and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to prioritize the safety of accredited journalists covering their activities.

In a press statement issued by the State Chairman of the Union, Comrade Festus Alenkhe, the NUJ emphasized the vital role journalists play as the fourth estate of the realm, dedicated to impartially watchdog the society. Alenkhe stressed the need for journalists to be protected from any potential harm while carrying out their professional duties.

“We earnestly request the APC, LP, and PDP to ensure the physical and emotional safety of journalists during the events,” stated Alenkhe.

The Union also urged its members who have not received invitations to reach out to the publicity secretaries of the respective political parties for their safety and to uphold journalism’s integrity as an unbiased profession.

“As a collective voice of journalists, we believe these precautions are essential for creating an environment where the press can fulfill their duties without fear or hindrance,” Alenkhe added.

The Council Chairman added all journalists are encouraged to carry their valid identity cards at all times during coverage to facilitate smooth access and identification.
