Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, has unyieldingly declared his bid for the upcoming 2024 governorship election under the banner of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), emphasizing that no force can deter his aspirations. Making the announcement at the Bishop Kelly Centre in Benin, Shaibu, a seasoned politician with three decades of experience, urged both voters and party members to support his candidacy, citing his deep connection to the people and collaborative efforts with Governor Godwin Obaseki over the past seven years.
In a live broadcast on Monday, Shaibu assured the public of his commitment to delivering practical governance if elected, emphasizing his track record as a former House of Assembly member and federal lawmaker. The election is scheduled for September 21, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission.
Shaibu’s decision has triggered tensions with Governor Obaseki, who reportedly opposes his deputy’s succession. Despite a previous legal dispute and subsequent withdrawal, Shaibu remains somewhat isolated, currently operating his office outside the Government House in Benin.
Undeterred by internal conflicts, Shaibu pledged to continue Obaseki’s projects, particularly in the agricultural sector, promising to “hit the ground running” if elected. The deputy governor’s campaign organization had earlier issued a letter, dated November 23, inviting stakeholders to witness Shaibu’s formal declaration.
In an interview in Abuja, Shaibu justified his gubernatorial ambition, stating that Edo needs competent and experienced leadership for practical governance. He cautioned against experimenting with new leaders and advocated for individuals familiar with the state’s politics and needs. Despite challenges, Shaibu remains resolute in his pursuit of the highest office in Edo State.
