Eregi Girls School in Kenya, Leaving Over 90 Students Struggling to Walk

Reports confirm that approximately 95 students from the school have been hospitalized across various medical facilities due to this enigmatic condition. These healthcare centers include Kakamega County General Hospital (KCGH), Iguhu Hospital, and Shibwe Sub-county hospitals.

As reported by NTV Kenya, the students were admitted due to a condition that has left them with paralyzed limbs. The statistics disclosed by the school’s management reveal that 29 students are presently receiving treatment at Iguhu Hospital, 39 at Kakamega Referral Hospital, 31 at Mukumu Mission Hospital, and 14 at Shibwe Hospital.

An anonymous nurse familiar with the situation suggested that the cause of this condition may be an electrolyte imbalance. This imbalance is characterized by the loss of bodily fluids, which is notably observed in many of the affected students.

“This condition is referred to as electrolyte imbalance, a state that results in the depletion of bodily fluids,” stated the nurse.

This recent incident echoes a similar occurrence that transpired months ago when Mukumu Girls High School in Kenya was forced to close its doors on April 3. Over 100 students were hospitalized due to a mysterious illness marked by symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and high fever. Further investigations by the Ministry of Health unveiled that the students had consumed food contaminated with human waste.

According to the Acting Director General for Health, Patrick Amoth, “Initial laboratory investigations have revealed Enterotoxigenic E. coli and Salmonella typhi as the causes of the illness.

The electrolyte imbalance could be as a result of the early diarrhea symptoms observed. If addressed quickly, the electrolyte imbalance can be averted.
