British Vogue has made history by appointing Chioma Nnadi as the head of editorial content, making her the first black woman to hold the role.

The 44-year-old journalist of Nigerian and Swiss-German descent will be replacing Edward Enninful, who was the first male and black editor of British Vogue.

Enninful announced his resignation back in June, which left many wondering who would be filling the coveted role. Nnadi’s appointment is a significant milestone for diversity and inclusivity in the fashion industry.

Nnadi’s impressive journalistic career has taken her from Nigeria to the United States, where she started working for publications such as Fader and Trace Magazine. She then moved to New York Magazine, where she quickly made a name for herself as an editor, before landing at Vogue in 2018.

The London-born journalist expressed her excitement and gratitude at the news of being appointed, stating on Instagram that she is “honoured and excited to be coming home”. Nnadi’s transition from working for US-based Teen Vogue to the head of editorial content at British Vogue highlights the publication’s commitment to diversity and inclusivity.

While Nnadi will not hold the title of editor-in-chief, her new role as head of editorial content will see her oversee the magazine’s content production. This appointment is a significant moment for British Vogue and the fashion industry as a whole, as it represents the ongoing efforts to promote diversity and representation in the industry.
