The Chairperson of the Edo State Universal Basic Education (SUBEB), Mrs. Ozavize Salami, has announced that public primary and junior secondary schools across Edo State will resume a five-day school week as academic activities commence on Monday, September 11th, 2023.

In her statement, Salami declared that all public primary and junior secondary schools would commence in-class learning from the first day of resumption. She further expounded that this was in accordance with the academic calendar released by the State Ministry of Education for the 2023-2024 academic session.

Salami also acknowledged that last term they upheld a three-day learning week as directed by Governor Godwin Obaseki to ease pressure on teachers and education sector leaders due to fuel subsidy removal effects. However, starting this term they would be reverting back to their original five-day school week schedule.

She further emphasized how restoring a five-day classroom learning week would ensure regular teacher-pupil contact time while providing much-needed in-person support for pupils’ learning which ultimately leads to improved outcomes. The return is supported by an elaborate monitoring system manned by trained field officers.

As part of efforts made by the state government towards cushioning citizens from fuel subsidy removal effects, SUBEB had implemented a hybrid program combining three days of in-classroom instruction with two days remote work via EdoBEST@Home program investment sustained over time.

Salami also mentioned that during this new term period there will be a strategic intervention program aimed at accelerating foundational literacy and numeracy skills among students identified as lagging behind expected standards based on previous performance levels. These identified pupils will take baseline tests which help ascertain competency levels before placement into appropriate intervention programs begins.

Salami encouraged parents to allow their children or wards resume early within the first week of school so everything can be put into place before commencement date arrives; eligible persons include those who resumed early enough for free eye tests and reading glasses according to Board practices.
