Yevgeny Prigozhin, the leader of the Wagner group, is believed to have died after his private jet mysteriously crashed. Prigozhin, who was also known as “Putin’s chef” due to his catering company’s work with the Russian president, was reportedly flying on his private jet when it crashed in an unknown location.
The notorious mercenary chief was onboard the plane flying from Moscow to St. Petersburg when it suddenly plummeted to the ground on August 23. Footage of the crash showed the aircraft spiralling downwards with smoke emanating from the fuselage before smashing into the ground.
According to the Russian state news agency, Tass, the plane had ten people onboard, including three pilots. The authorities are now investigating the incident, which occurred in the Tver region, some 60 miles north of Moscow.
Having ties with the Kremlin, Prigozhin’s private military force, Wagner, has fought alongside Russia’s regular army in Ukraine. The Wagner group is known for its covert operations in conflict zones, including Syria and Libya. However, the Russian authorities have not yet confirmed whether Prigozhin’s death will have any impact on the group’s future operations.
Prigozhin was known to be a close ally of Vladimir Putin, and the Wagner Group, which is believed to be a private military company, has been linked to operations in Syria, Ukraine, and Africa. Although there has been no official confirmation of the crash or Prigozhin’s death, several sources have reported the news.
The circumstances surrounding the crash are currently unclear, and it is not known whether anyone else was on board the plane. More information is likely to be released in the coming days.
